Introduction

Six morning seminars, each covering critical energy, electricity and issues facing South Africa, are planned. The seminars each provide practical solutions that can unlock bottlenecks, mitigate risk and encourage investment, economic growth and job creation. The seminars each involve broad policy, regulatory, social, economic business, labour and community issues that are topical and relevant for the year ahead.

Seminar 6:

Technology for Good

ICT is becoming pervasive in the 21st Century. It is being used for both bad and good. ICT is a tool that can spread fake news and rumours, steal our identity and concentrate power and wealth in the hands of a tiny minority. It can also bring the world of information to our mobile device, massify education, build communities and give every citizen a voice in our global village. A number of NGOs and community organisations are working hard to grow and develop the “technology for good” side of the ICT coin. The WWF’s “Contract for the Web” has set this objective as one of its 9 principles and has specifically challenged the corporate sector to commit to this principle. An Indian-based NGO, called CMS, has defined “Technology for Development” (T4D) as a way of viewing “technology as a force multiplier, problem solver, paradigm changer and significant enabler of social impact”. This Seminar will showcase examples and case studies of “ICT Technology for Good” that are relevant to South Africa. We will focus on some of our most pressing social and economic challenges and ways in which ICT has positively impacted on them. We will also focus, via a panel discussion, on how Corporate South Africa can amplify and enable these positive efforts.
