#DataMustFall: Available and affordable access to the Internet in South Africa

Nedbank EEBI Seminar 2

Introduction

Six morning seminars, each covering critical energy, electricity and ICT issues facing South Africa, are planned. The seminars each provide practical solutions that can unlock bottlenecks, mitigate risk and encourage investment, economic growth and job creation. The seminars each involve broad policy, regulatory, social, economic business, labour and community issues that are topical and relevant for the year ahead.

Seminar 2:

#DataMustFall: Available and affordable access to the Internet in South Africa

In January 2019, 31,18 million South Africans were Internet users. Of these a large majority (28.99 million) were mobile Internet users. While South Africa tops the “PwC Africa Connectivity Index”, it still lags behind most of its international peers. In this seminar we will present some of these statistics so as to develop an up-to-date understanding of how the Internet is being used in South Africa. We will then explore the constraints and major bottlenecks that inhibit higher Internet penetration in SA. These include the cost of mobile data, appropriate levels of digital literacy, speed and quality of service, and others.  Practical solutions, with an emphasis on the role of Corporate South Africa, will be presented. Finally, we will present some case studies highlighting some of the economic, social and developmental advantages that South Africa could – and should – be achieving via improved Internet access. These include education, e-commerce, e-government, benefitting from digital transformation/4IR.

In summary, this seminar will step through the following topics:

  • Status of Internet Connectivity in SA

  • Constraints limiting higher Internet Connectivity

  • Ways of achieving better connectivity and the role companies can play

  • Advantages of higher connectivity.
